Happy Belated New Year!!

新年が明けてしばらく経ちますが、外国の方とお話をしているとお正月などの日本文化について聞かれることがあるかもしれません。

今回は、日本独自の文化など、相手が知らないことを英語で伝えるときのポイントについてご紹介したいと思います。

相手が知らないことを説明するときのポイント

ポイント１：　大枠（カテゴリー・種類など）を伝える

まずはカテゴリー・種類などの大枠を説明しましょう。

「正月」： Shogatsu refers to Japanese-style New Year.
「富士山」： Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
「天ぷら」： Tempura is a kind of Japanese dish.

ポイント２：　大枠を伝えたうえで詳細を説明する

細かな情報はあとから付け足す感覚で説明・描写していくと自分でも説明しやすく、聞き手も理解がしやすくなります。

例）「正月」（習慣など） 何を行うか・どんな意味があるかを説明
・It is a traditional festival to celebrate the New Year.
・Many people visit shrine or temple and pray for good fortune for the whole year.
・Children receive New Year’s gift money called “Otoshidama”.

例）「富士山」（形あるもの・地理的特徴など） 場所・高さ・形などを描写
・It is the highest volcano in Japan at 3,776 meters.
・It is located in the central part of main island of Japan.
・It has a beautiful cone shape.

例）「天ぷら」（食べ物） 作り方・食べ方・味・食感などを説明
・They are made from seafood or vegetables dipped in batter and deep-fried.
・They are served with salt or special sauce.
・Freshly fried tempura is very crispy and succulent.

★プラスα で：　相手の身近にあるものに例える★
相手の文化にある近いものを引き合いに出して「●●みたいなもの」と例えてみるとわかりやすさがグンとアップします。

（例）　天ぷら
・They vaguely resemble fritters.
・They are quite similar to fritters.

相手にとっての理解しやすいさを意識しながら話す練習を積み重ねて、わかりやすい説明力、伝わる会話力を身につけていきましょう！
