I grew up in a place where it feels like summer all year long. So, imagining myself standing on a snow-covered ground was literally my idea of heaven. But I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. I think every kid from a tropical country dreams of seeing snow at least once in his/her life. And that dream of mine came true when I lived and worked outside my country a few years ago.

When I was given a chance to turn my life around, I took it. I left my country and went head first on an adventure that changed my life in so many ways. It was not easy to say goodbye to everyone I know, as well as to gather up the courage to live and work in a place where English is not even an official language. That time, I just knew I needed to move; I needed to go somewhere far.

My weeks of pondering eventually led me to Tieling, somewhere in Northeast China. And though I had a tough time adjusting with their culture during the first few months, I actually ended up enjoying my life there despite the language barrier and the extremely wild weather.

I guess the best part about living there is watching the seasons change. It’s just so magical to see the trees in bright colors one day, and then completely naked and covered in snow after a few weeks.

I’ll always remember that year and a half that I spent in China – when I finally fulfilled my dream of having a white Christmas. I don’t know when I can experience that again, but I’m really hoping that it’s not the last.
