TODAY’S PHRASES　(今日のフレーズ)

道順を説明するのは日本語でもなかなか難しいものですよね。
今回は道案内の場面で便利なフレーズをご紹介します。

Do you see the police station?

▼ Do you see ～?

「～は見えますか？」

電話など遠隔から道順を説明するときに「そこから●●は見える？」と聞いてみることは日本語でもあると思いますが、このフレーズはそんな場面で使えます。

相手が見えているものを推察して“Do you see the police station?”と聞き、その答えを踏まえて道案内をする流れを作ります。

反対に、相手が見えているものを踏まえて道案内をしたい場合は、
“What do you see there?（何が見えますか？）”と聞いてもOKです。

＜類似表現＞
・Can you tell me what you see there?
・Do you know where you are now?
・Are there any landmarks there?

And our office is just behind the police station.

「〇〇は～のすぐ裏・うしろ」

道案内をするときは、位置関係を説明するための表現が必要ですよね。behindは、何かの裏手・うしろにあることを示しますが、強調して「すぐ裏に・真裏に」と伝えたい場合は “just behind”と表現します。

位置に関する他の表現も併せて見てみましょう。

＜位置を示す表現いろいろ＞
・next to（～のとなりに）:
　You’ll find our office next to the rail station.
・in front of（～の前に）:
　There’s a gym in front of the dentist.
・opposite（～の反対に）:
　Our office is in the opposite side of the grocery store.
・between A and B（AとBの間に）:
　You can find our office between the bookstore and the bank.
・diagonally opposite to（～の斜め向かいにある）:
　Our office is diagonally opposite to the hotel.
・take a left/right（左折／右折する）：
　Take a left at the third corner.
・on the far left/right（一番左・右の）：
　Our office is in the building on the far right.
・the first/second/third…（一番・二番・三番目の）：
　Our office is in the third building from the intersection.

道案内をする場面では、相手が焦っている可能性もありますので、なるべくシンプルに短い文で説明することを心掛けたいですね。
