フィリピンのルソン島南部に位置するブルサン山は、最近では2011年の2月に噴火したばかりの、とても活発な活火山です。

Mt.Bulusan: A Place to Remember

After five long years of living in the city, I travelled back to my mother’s hometown located in the South of Luzon. I was astonished to see a lot of changes that the place has become unfamiliar to me.

One day, I saw my friends at the flea market. They invited me to attend our high school reunion. I was really excited meeting my old friends.

When I was at the reunion venue, I noticed a light coming from somewhere. I asked my friend about what I saw and she said, “He’s longing for his maiden again.” I got puzzled and curious about what she said, so I asked her, “What do you mean?” She whispered, “You’ll find the answer.”

The next day, my cousin asked me to accompany his friend from Manila to a small nearby town. The trip proved to be interesting and fun that I almost forgot my other concerns. Suddenly, I found myself standing right in front of a beautiful mountain. The scenery was really enchanting, but for some reasons, it brought a sad smile to my face. There seemed to be something behind those trees that made me uneasy. And the wind; it felt like it was inviting me to explore the place.

Then an old man unexpectedly loomed up before me and said, “I’m glad that you came.” I felt that I’ve known him for so long. Grabbing the moment, I took advantage to ask him many questions about the place. Then I explained to him that before I got there I experienced unexplainable things like seeing the light and feeling lost from within. He said, “Maybe he’s summoning you.”

At this point, he started to narrate about the legend of San Bernardino. Coming to light, my curiosity got answered. As told, he is a mighty spirit searching for his maiden.

Bewildered, I had a different impression. The mighty spirit who dwelt in Mt. Bulusan may not be a typical handsome royalty but he could be a symbol of nature. Nowadays, people have become negligent and irresponsible that we tend to forget our responsibility to maintain and support our planet earth. Perhaps, the close encounter I had with Mt. Bulusan’s nature spirit was an awakening moment. It must have come to serve as a simple reminder to teach people like me, the need to take care and appreciate the beauty of nature and everything that embodies it.
