日本語に多いやんわりした表現は、曖昧な分、パッと英語で言い換えるのがなかなか難しいですよね。「これを言いたい」と思ったときには、咄嗟に英語で表現できるように発話練習をしておきたいものです。

今回は仕事でもよく使う大和言葉の英語表現パート３をお届けします。

Aさんは今しがた外出されたところです。代わりにご用件をお伺いしてもよろしいでしょうか。

Regarding the project, it was forced to stop as per instructions from the top.
例の案件ですが、上層部から待ったがかかってしまったようです。

We were not able to accomplish the sales target for this term although we made an effort. Let’s make it happen, whatever it takes in the next term.
今期の営業目標は、力及ばず未達でした。来期はなんとしても達成しましょう。

Would you take a look at this document when you are available?
お手すきの際に、こちらの資料に目を通してくださいますか？

修飾する大和言葉

We sincerely appreciate your extraordinary support.
この度は、ひとかたならぬご支援をいただき誠にありがとうございました。

It would be hard to implement this unreliable plan.
こんなにおざなりな計画を実行に移すのは難しいですよ。

Mr B always handles the situations tactfully.
Bさんはいつも如才なく対応されていますね。

心の動き・動作を表す大和言葉

Unwillingly, we have decided to abandon the research and development due to budget problems.
不本意ながら、予算の問題により例の研究開発は中止することにいたしました。

I know it’s not my place, but may I say something?
差し出がましいとは存じますが、ひと言申し上げてもよろしいでしょうか。

With all due respect, I can’t agree with the suggestion you have made.
僭越ながら申し上げますが、先ほどのご提案には賛同できません.

Would you be able to tell us the reason why you declined the job offer, if it doesn’t cause any inconvenience.
差し支えなければ、入社をご辞退された理由を伺ってもよろしいでしょうか。

Let’s put it behind us, as we were both at fault.
今回のことはお互いさまですから、水に流しましょう。
